About South Bend Driveway Paving
South Bend Driveway Paving is a locally owned asphalt contractor working driveways in and around South Bend, Indiana. We replace driveways that are past saving, resurface the ones that still have a solid base, patch potholes and fill cracks, pave raw ground for the first time, sealcoat sound surfaces, convert gravel drives, widen and extend existing drives, and pave and stripe small commercial lots. Indiana licensing and insurance are both in place.
The part that sets a driveway apart sits under it, where nobody photographs it. We run roughly six to eight inches of compacted crushed stone over a rolled subgrade, then two courses of hot mix asphalt on top of that. A vibratory plate compactor gets the tight corners and the apron. A steel drum roller gets everything else, while the mix is still hot enough to move. Our written quote lists the compacted depth of the stone and the compacted depth of each asphalt course, so you can lay it next to any other bid and compare the same numbers.
South Bend hands a driveway two loads instead of one. Lake Michigan sends snow across this county all winter, more than any other Indiana city gets, and that snow melts and refreezes over and over between November and March. Under it sits clay-heavy glacial till, which sheds water sideways toward low spots and driveway edges rather than letting it drain down. Water that cannot leave gets trapped, freezes, and lifts whatever is above it. People plan for rain. The freeze is the one that takes driveways apart here.
We also say no. A drive cracked into a web across most of its surface does not need sealer, and we will not sell it. An overlay laid over a failed base cracks again in the same pattern, so we quote the replacement instead and explain why. Concrete work belongs to a concrete contractor. Frozen ground stops base compaction and cold ground stops hot mix reaching density, so we do not promise winter paving to anybody. Saying that out loud loses us work. It costs less than doing a driveway twice.
